Although born in Tokyo, Toshimitsu’s heritage lay in the snowy mountains of Echigo, now called Niigata. A seventeenth-generation descendant of the legendary warlord Uesugi Kenshin, she carried the weight of that heritage in quiet ways. Her grandfather, a reserved historian and novelist, devoted his life to uncovering long-forgotten family secrets. He once spoke of a dream about a samurai named Toshimitsu who gave his life to protect the clan’s final treasure. Upon her birth, he gave her that name. The name “Toshimitsu” was traditionally given to men, but to him, spirit mattered more than gender. Years later, the family sword, an emblem of their legacy, vanished along with precious history books written by her grandfather. When she learned that relics from other clans had also disappeared, she recognized the pattern. Determined to reclaim what was stolen, she set out to restore her family’s honor and safeguard its history, piece by piece.
