Turning 18

I don't know if this should sound like a major milestone, but here I am, wondering what it means to suddenly "become an adult." Will I wake up different? More serious, more responsible, more ready for the world? I don't know if I'll wake up different or if the mirror will show me the same old Alecia: messy, dreamy, with more questions than answers. But the world will see me differently, and that changes everything.

I don't expect fireworks or a new version of myself appearing in the mirror. But there's something different about knowing that, suddenly, the world will see me as an adult.

Growing up is losing innocence, they say. But I've never been innocent. I've always known that life takes a toll on feeling too much. What's changing now isn't the awareness of this, but the courage to embrace who I am completely. I won't shrink to fit anyone's expectations. I won't be the sweet, obedient, easygoing girl men fantasize about. I'll continue to be unapologetic chaos. I'll continue to be intensity, storm, and calm in the same body.

Being of age won't tame me. On the contrary, it will give me even more reasons to live the way I want. I will make mistakes, fall, get up, love wrong, lose myself, and find myself again. I will be free, I will be a noise in the gray city. Because being an adult isn't about erasing yourself, it's about embracing who you've always been, only stronger.

I'm no longer the sixteen-year-old girl who left Los Angeles. The one who believed love was simple and that life would follow the perfect script. I've changed. I've grown. And maybe that's precisely what makes me dangerous: I wear my scars like a crown. And if the world thinks it's ready for me, let me tell you right away: it's not.

A. +18.
