Returning to Seattle turned out to be far less grand than she had imagined. Sometimes, when she had been away from home for too long, her mind played tricks on her. It mixed her memories up until all that was left was a mass of confusion and bullshit. She tried to remember the places that had meant something to her as she drove past arcades that acted as a windbreaker for the rest of the city. The paint was still chipped in all the same places and holes large enough to put her fist in covering most of their walls. She had wanted beauty and found filth. Names and faces, nothing came. All that filled her memory was the old man's coffin being lowered into the grave.
She fumbled for the window release, stabbing at it until she heard the familiar whine of the motors kick in and the glass rolled down. Relaxing into her seat, she inhaled deeply and immediately started to gag. It was still there, below the candyfloss and cooking fat that poured from the takeaways that lined the coastline. It was the smell of a population waiting to die.
She yanked the steering wheel to one side, slammed on the brakes, fell out of the car door onto her knees and brought up the whiskey she'd swallowed a day before. Her vision started to blur as her stomach muscles strained to empty all that they could. The tears ran down her face and joined the mess that had appeared on the pavement until there was only silence left. This was the vision that had danced in her mind for countless years, haunting her and driving her further into the forced isolation that only succeeded in feeding the vicious fire in her veins.
She heard a couple nearby arguing about adopting another cat. The last one must have run away in search of a bullshit free life.
"What's going on with them?" someone asked behind her.
"I think their cat joined a street gang," she replied.
