KC’s eyes had been glued to the screen for two days, maybe three. Time crept through the cracks, she was far too wired to sleep, utterly messed up, in the midst of a manic episode that was frying her gears, likely triggered by opiate withdrawal. She'd had to cut back on the pills - the percocets were getting too much, and she was so damn close to getting those keys, she wouldn’t risk it now.
She was hunkered down in some rented apartment in Koreatown. It was messy, smelled like instant ramen and patchouli incense. The curtains were slung open, the AC was broken, and Nutsack was curled next to a lava lamp on her nightstand, eyeing her like a little gargoyle.
On her main screen, she had a mirror of a darknet server stolen off a cartel relay she’d snatched months ago. She was trying to decrypt transaction logs, crypto wallet keys, hit contracts - anything she could sell to the highest bidder. On the desk beneath the main screen, she had one laptop connected to two SSDs, running the code she’d spent nights cracking. She eyed the screen, praying silently every time a line of code hit a partial string.
"C’mon, baby, c’mon," she muttered frantically, nervously chewing on her nails. "I want that routing table." She was so close.
On her second screen, a live map of IP pings blinked, dots bouncing across dead routers, breaking the firewall one fragment at a time. Nutsack let out a tired meow, lazily arching his spine.
"we’re about to be rich."
Her terminal beeped.

Her pupils dilated, and her fingers trembled. "yay," she celebrated too soon. Nutsack hissed and launched across the room in a blur. Moment later, a loud bang echoed from the door.⠀⠀⠀
