Y148 - Homework 2
I will tell you something about Father Damien.
Father Damien was a priest from Belgium who became famous for helping people with a serious disease called leprosy. He was born in 1840 and later traveled all the way to the island of Molokai in Hawaii. There, people with leprosy were sent to live in isolation because others were afraid of getting sick. Father Damien chose to live with them and take care of them.
He built houses, schools, and even a church for the leprosy patients. He also gave them hope and treated them like real people when most of the world ignored them. Sadly, after many years of helping them, Father Damien got leprosy too. He died in 1889, but many people remembered him as a brave and kind man.
I think Father Damien is a real hero because he didn’t think about himself—he just wanted to help others. He showed what true courage and kindness look like. That’s why I think he’s an important person in history, because courage and kindness are eternal.
