Letting Go
Emma sat on the porch steps long after everyone had gone to bed. The night was quiet—too quiet for the war inside her chest. She looked at the stars, trying not to cry, trying to breathe past the ache in her throat.
Leif was asleep inside, probably curled up on couch with a throw blanket and their daughter that adored him. That’s who he was—adorable, kind, loyal to a fault. The kind of man who deserved soft things. Steady things. Not someone like her—bruised by life, loud in all the wrong moments, and always running from ghosts she never invited.
She hated how good he was. Not because it annoyed her—but because it made her want to be better. And sometimes… she wasn’t sure she could be.
Maybe he’d be happier without her. Maybe he should be with someone simpler. Someone who didn’t bring a storm every time she walked into the room. Someone who didn’t second-guess love or wake up haunted by memories they didn’t talk about.
She was a mess. And Leif… Leif deserved clean slates, not pasts with sharp edges.
But when he looked at her he didn’t flinch. He smiled like he already knew all her jagged parts and still wanted to stay. And that terrified her.
Because loving him made her strong. Letting him go might be the right thing.
But it would shatter her.
Still… if he ever looked at her differently—like the fire in her was too much, like the darkness scared him—she would let him go. Not because she didn’t love him.
But because she loved him too damn much to ever be what held him back.
