B-Day in Los Angeles
"A spa weekend is a great idea. What else?"
Sid frowned and looked at Dolly.
"What do you mean, what else? Isn't that enough? It's a five-star resort with a Michelin-rated restaurant." His daughter had clearly not read the brochure in its entirety.
"That's nice, but what are you getting her for her birthday?" Dolly asked, speaking slowly, as if he were a child.
Sid was about to call his other daughter. Surely, Gia would see how awesome his idea was. "That's her birthday gift. I don't understand what you're not understanding," he said, a hint of frustration in his voice.
Dolly raised an eyebrow, obviously unfazed by the man's frustration.
"My mom is pregnant, right?"
"Yes? So?"
"So either the spa is for the pregnancy or it's for her birthday. It can't be both," Dolly explained before frowning. "Wait! Are you broke? Is that why? Gia and I have put some money aside from the hot dog stands. I'm sure she would be happy to lend you some... with interest."
Sid could feel a vein throbbing on his forehead.
Maybe Dolly had a point. Maybe a birthday gift should be...
a gift.
He sighed. "Fine. I’ll think of something else."
Dolly smiled, satisfied.
"I suggest jewelry. Or a nice dress. Or both. You’re welcome. Oh, and if you change your mind, make it quick. Interest goes up after the 1st of the month."
She added this before jumping off her chair and running back to her room.
Sid stood there with his mouth open, aghast.
When did his sweet angel turn into a hot dog loan shark?
Thankfully, he had an idea. Not jewelry - but maybe something just as precious.
He grabbed his phone and made a call.
Perhaps he had found the perfect gift after all.
