12. the great pretender
The question plagued him like a bad habit as he took a hit from the joint: So you do recognise me?
He tended to forget many faces but categorized others into memory by association. Some good times. Mostly death. Gone was that unmistakable pink hair that he’d never breathed that he liked as he came up with her ridiculous nickname.
He remembered her, but he also needed to forget her because, for some odd reason, he still wanted to protect her as the months and years passed. Tripp hadn’t wanted her caught up in what he was in now — didn’t want to give the man what he was working for more ammunition against him. Even if the man himself said that he protected women and children, he knew better than most that the men in their world were crooked as fuck, but it did say a lot that he had strong women backing him in his endeavours, so perhaps he could trust the egomaniac that was his new boss. Maybe.
He would pretend. Pretend he was playing a game — possibly the longest game in his life, just for a little while to feel normal.
