Just... to see if it still felt like something, you know." She shifted, a faint sound in the background, maybe a lighter.
"He knew me. Once. Or at least, he knew the version of me that existed before all this shit. Before the fake names, the blood... and before silence became easier than truth." Another pause. Longer. "I don't even know if he recognized me. I didn't say much, in fact, just enough to trigger a memory. Maybe. Time changes everything, I know that. People change.
Fuck, I've changed. I'm not even sure what I'd do if he
did recognize me."
She let out a breath that was not quite a sigh. "But I did it anyway. I reached out and let myself be seen. Suspected, at least." A long silence followed, "I risked it, yeah. 'Cause everything feels like dust, so I did something considered reckless in my current code. Just to remember... to remember if danger still makes my heart beat. Well, turns out... it does."
One last inhale, "still not sure if that's a
good thing tho."
