Summer arrived late for me that year. It started when we got back from Mars, after weeks spent inside a cramped spaceship, stuck in the same routine, wearing the same suits, hearing the same muffled voices through helmets. It was me, Maya, and Regina. Three people on a mission, dealing with the unexpected on a planet that turned out to be much stranger than we thought.

Back on Mars, everything was dust and strategy. Nothing felt spontaneous. Life happened in scheduled cycles, and we barely saw each other for real. The suits covered everything, bodies, expressions, features. And with all the chaos of trying not to become just another story involving clever primates, there wasn’t much room to really notice anyone beyond what was necessary.

It was only after we came back, standing on Earth again, that I noticed. When Maya took off the suit and the sun hit her face for the first time in weeks, something about that moment stood out. A strong contrast between everything we’d been through and that simple image, warm light, messy hair, an easy smile. It wasn’t exactly about beauty. It was more the odd feeling of finally seeing someone you’d spent so much time with, but had never actually seen.

Summer showed up right there, in that brightness of an ordinary day, in the return of heat, in the quiet end of the mission. And maybe that was the most surprising part, realizing that even after setting foot on another planet, it was still Earth’s light that revealed people best.
