TheRealDan - Instablog - What Makes A Mum
🎶Now Playing: Brandi Carlile - The Mother

It’s a strange thing, watching the girl you love become something even greater.
My Cherry, I see the way her eyes settle on the tiniest things. A cry. A sigh. A flutter of breath. She hears it all. Feels it all. Responds like it’s instinct, like some invisible code has been unlocked inside her.
And I sit on the edge of the bed sometimes, guitar in hand, useless as a lighthouse in a storm, and I just watch.
She’s becoming a mum.
It makes me think.
My own mum, Mia, she was great. Complicated, but great.
She played with fire, and when it all got too much, she vanished. Died, or so we thought.
She wasn’t perfect. But I remember the warmth of her. The smell of her perfume on my pillow when she kissed me goodnight.
That’s something. That’s enough to haunt you, and confuse the hell out of you for the rest of your life.
And Livi.
My sister.
God, she was just a girl herself when she became a mum to me. She never signed up for that. But she did it anyway.
Late night school projects. Kicking off when I got in fights.
Telling me I was something, even when I felt like nothing.
Livi’s the reason I kept going.
She never wore a crown, but she ruled my little kingdom.
And now there’s Cherry.
She didn’t just step into motherhood, she blooms in it.
Not without struggle, not without tears, but with this raw, unfiltered love.
I see her, half asleep, holding our son like he’s the last star in the sky.
And I know, right then, that is what mum looks like.
It’s not about biology
It’s not about perfection
What makes a mum?
It’s the courage to stay when it’s hard.
The love that doesn’t flinch.
I’ve been raised by women like that.
Now I get to love one.
What a miracle.
