What if my soul is never set ablaze?
It hit Jerrica in a quiet moment—watching her brothers wrapped in the kind of love that felt electric, alive, undeniable. The kind that made you lean closer without meaning to, just to feel the warmth spilling off of it. It was in the way their voices softened, the way their bodies leaned in instinctively, the way their partners lit up when they entered a room. Jerrica saw it, and it stirred something unspoken inside her.
She’d never had that kind of fire.
There were flickers, though. Two, to be exact.
One was familiar still, hanging at the edge of possibility. There was a slow burn there—comforting, steady, maybe even enough if she let it be. If she stopped expecting a wildfire and allowed herself to feel the heat of a gentler flame. The potential was there, buried beneath layers they both seemed hesitant to peel back.
Then there was him. The one who came closest to setting her soul ablaze. His presence had felt dangerous in the best way, like catching a glimpse of a life you never knew you wanted. But before it could become something real, he pulled away. Said he was going through something. And that was the last clear signal she got. She doesn’t know if he’ll ever reach out again. She doesn’t know if she wants to be the one waiting.
Maybe the truth is that she’s too guarded. Maybe she’s built up her defenses so well that she doesn't know how to let someone through who might actually light the match. Or maybe she's still searching for the kind of love that sets everything else into motion—the kind she knows exists because she’s seen it. Right there in Zeke and Ezra's eyes.
Until then, she keeps moving forward. Watching, wondering, and staying open—just enough—to what might still come next.
