Something About the Green Pin

I signed up for a Halloween party. Not because I’m into dressing up or overly fond of loud music and cheap drinks, but because something about the idea of stepping into a room full of strangers — all half in disguise, half trying to be seen — felt oddly appealing. Maybe it’s the season. Maybe it’s just where my mind has been lately. Either way, I clicked “yes” without overthinking it, and that alone felt like an invitation to something slightly out of character.

There was this detail on the event page that caught my attention. A small thing, really, but the kind that sticks. Every guest could choose a colored pin to wear — red if you’re taken, yellow if you’re undecided, and green if you’re available. A bit of organized chaos, I suppose. Still, there’s something disarmingly honest about admitting your intent with a flash of color before anyone even asks. I picked green. Not because I’m desperate to be found, but because I’m curious about who might be looking.

Since then, something unexpected has started to unfold. I ended up talking to someone, casually at first, then not so casually. There was a spark, the kind you don’t force or plan, and it’s been growing, slowly, with just the right amount of mystery. No real names, no promises, just words exchanged late into the night that leave you wondering what kind of story you’ve stumbled into without even realizing it. I don’t know what to expect from the party anymore, and maybe that’s exactly the point.

The truth is, I don’t usually let myself get too drawn in by hypotheticals or by people I haven’t met. But this time, there’s a shift. I can feel it. Something about the way this is unfolding — uncertain, playful, and completely uncharted — makes me want to see where it leads.

The party hasn’t happened yet, and still, something already has.
